Now We're Cooking With the Heat On

Has your warm season lawn been slow to green up this spring? Mine too. It's been warm some, true, but it's also stayed cool late into the spring and this has slowed down green up of warm season lawns. Take heart, this weekend it will finally be getting warm out and your lawn will start to green up in the heat.

Warm Season Lawns

  • Prepare to fertilize your warm season lawn (Zoysia, Bermuda, Centipede) after it has fully greened up. In many areas, soil temperatures are warm enough to fertilize the warm-season grasses (soil temps should be above 65 degrees).
  • Our Total Lawn Food 16-4-8 + Iron is what you want for Zoysia lawns and Bermuda lawns.
    >> Read the Best Times to Apply Fertilizer
  • Your TifBlair Centipede should be fertilized with very little fertilizer. We have our own special formulation just for it with lower nitrogen: Centipede Formulation 5-10-30 + Iron.

Disease Alert

Ugh! It rained so much then it suddenly got dry. These conditions and several other factors promote growth of bipolaris, a disease that can be remedied with 5-10-30 fertilizer. We keep this fertilizer in stock and we've written about it so you can diagnose it. In doubt about the symptoms or need to schedule fertilizer pickup? Contact your local store and we'll take care of you.

KEEP Weeding

Are you seeing a lot of spring weeds?

If you're seeing a lot of spring weeds this year it's because the high amount of rainfall has leached your winter application of pre-emergent herbicide from the area. Sometimes the weeds may be rather tall - the best solution for this situation is to get your mower out of winter storage and mow down the weeds. This technique applies to both actively growing tall fescue and warm seasons lawns; even if your warm season lawn is just greening up and doesn't need mowing yet - yes, mow those weeds anyway!

  • Mowing is a no-brainer for suppressing weeds. Mow to break the weed life cycle. Mowing cuts off flower/seed heads and that stops weed seeds from making more weeds. Get yourself on a weekly mowing routine and don't let the weeds get ahead of you. Better yet, a robotic lawn mower will quietly and constantly mow for you and keep the despised weeds from going to seed - It's a clean and green, weed-stopping machine!
  • Mulch is a time-tested trick for suppressing weeds in flower beds. Spread it 2-4" thick and keep it 1-2" away from touching the trunks or stems of your plants.
  • Hand Weeding: Are you quarantined and need an excuse to get exercise? Try hand weeding for therapy and exercise - take your frustrations out on those weeds!
  • Post-emergent Herbicide: Is an herbicide applied directly to existing, visible weeds to kill them once they have already sprouted. We stock post-emergent herbicides to apply directly to weeds that you can see now, such as henbit and dandelions. At this time, the best method to combat weeds is to mow now and to plan ahead for winter by applying pre-emergents in September. Watch for this email at that time because we'll send a reminder.
  • What are pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides? We explain it in our blog post, What's the Difference?

Mower Tips

  • Gas Lawn Mower Tune-Up: Sharpen the blades, check the spark plug, clean the air filter, and check the oil and gas now so your mower is ready when you need it.
  • Electric Robotic Mower Tune-Up: Change blades, give it a cleaning, and update firmware/software. Our robotics technicians can service it for you or you can follow these video instructions.

New & Overseeded Elite Tall Fescue Lawn Tips
  • POST-Emergent Herbicide on NEW Fescue: If you planted a brand new Fescue lawn from seed and in the process tilled up existing soil, you've probably kicked up weed seeds and exposed them to the light. As a result, the seeds are probably now germinating alongside your Fescue seedlings. We have herbicides in stock.
  • Here's a rule of thumb: It's okay to apply a post-emergent herbicide labeled for use on Tall Fescue lawns after you've mowed your lawn 3 to 4 times. Come by for products!

Mowing Tall Fescue

  • Continue to mow your established Tall Fescue lawn as needed throughout the spring at 2.5-3" cut height; you may want to raise it higher as it gets warmer out.
